Open Egyptology: Comportment Guidelines

Comportment Guidelines

Photo by John Feeney/Saudi Aramco World/PADIATopics to be discussed: The purpose of these forums is to discuss Egypt. At the top of each forum page, you will find a description of what the forum is about. You should post messages only in the relevant forum. Please do not cross-post a message to more than one forum. If you post something in an inappropriate forum, it will be moved to a more appropriate forum.

Postings of a personal nature are not appropriate: your love life, your pets, your children and your past lives are all off-topic and should not be discussed on-site. This is not to discourage you from getting to know your fellow participants on a more personal level, but you should save such talk for private email. You are strongly encouraged to update your personal profile if you haven't done so yet so that your fellow forum participants can know more about you. Please refrain from using your profile or posts to advertise your political or religious affiliations or lack thereof (unless you earn your living from politics or religion) or for descriptions of your physical appearance (this is not a dating service).

Composing Posts: Before posting a message, we ask that you collect your thoughts and reflect on what is being said. While comments and communications need not be deep and philosophical, they should be thoughtful and contribute something new to the discussion (not simply "I agree," "Me too," "Tell us more," etc.).
If you want to thank another forum member for a post, by all means do so, but do so by private email so as to not clutter the remaining participants' mailboxes with posts that are irrelevant to them.

Please read all posts that have accumulated on a thread before you respond to it and proofread your messages (and spell check them if possible). If the topic of a thread changes as it progresses, please add to or change the subject line to reflect the content of your posting to make it easier for those not following the thread closely to know what is being discussed. Better yet, start a new thread to discuss the different topic, as focused discussions are more likely to attract more readers and participants than one with many posts. Posts that are an attempt to hijack an existing discussion and shift it to an unrelated topic will be deleted.

You will have 30 minutes to edit any posts you make. You may also delete your own posts at any time, as long as no one else has replied to them. You also are encouraged to search our forums to see if a discussion on a particular topic already exists, rather than starting a new (and possibly repetitive) thread.

On-site flaming is unwelcome. Likewise, please refrain from flaming or otherwise harassing forum members off-site. We are not responsible for any interaction which occurs off-site between individuals who become acquainted through these forums, and if you are harassed by another participant, you should contact their Internet service provider and/or the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

Differing viewpoints are acceptable and welcome. If someone says something you wish to challenge, you may criticize the position, but not the person holding the position. You can say that the position is wrong, but you cannot say or imply that a person is less than intelligent for believing it. Respect fellow forum members. Participants in these forums run the gamut from those who are very knowledgeable about Egypt to those knowing almost nothing on the subject. More knowledgeable participants should take care not to intimidate those less knowledgeable with what and how much they know. Similarly, if a knowledgeable participant introduces a term or notion not previously explained, he or she should explain the concept for those unfamiliar with it.

Posts that are politically, racially, or religiously derogatory or inflammatory are not welcome, whether directed at particular persons or groups of people. Likewise, links to sites of a religious or political nature should only be made in cases where it contributes information to an already existing discussion specifically about religion or politics.

Copyright and Commercial Posts: Do not repost posts and materials from Glyphdoctors to other lists, places, or publications. Links to other sites that violate copyright law are also not permitted. Commercial posts are strictly prohibited. Likewise, links in your personal profile or messages to commercial (for-profit and non-profit in nature) Web sites related to Egyptology in which you have a personal financial interest are prohibited. Exceptions to the latter rule will only be considered on a case-by-case basis, and you should contact Glyphdoctors to request permission to make such a link. If you need clarification of any of these rules, contact us. Thanks for your attention.

These are private forums and we reserve the right to delete or edit messages and to block users that violate these rules at any time without notice. If a post disappears, please contact us if you have any questions about why rather than repost it-because it will be deleted again. The posts herein reflect the views of their authors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Glyphdoctors.
